Most washing machines have a filter that is accessible from the front of the machine.
Iif you have one of these machines then you should check this filter once a month to clear out any debris that has collected there such as coins, hairclips, small toys.
To check simply open the flap and unscrew the filter. However you must be careful to screw it back in properly to prevent cross threading and leaks afterwards. If you clear your filter regularly it can prevent problems such as smelly machines and drain/spin faults.
After a while washing machines can begin to start to smell and get black mould around the door seal, a way of preventing/slowing down this process is by leaving the washing machine door open after use until it has dried out, warm wet environments create the mould. Also due to living in a hard water area we recommend you use a descaler at least twice a year with the machine empty to give it a good clear out of any limescale buildup.
Calgon is a water softener which will prevent a little bit but won’t stop it in an area like ours.
However sometimes the build up of mould is so bad the only option is to replace the door seal, which is a reasonable cost to do.
